How to love your hair!
January 1, International Self-Care Day is an important reminder for us all to take care of our well-being mentally, and physically. An essential aspect of self-care is taking care of your hair, especially if you bleach and dye it often. Today, we'd like to give you some tips to maintain healthy and vibrant hair.
  1. Washing: Use a cleansing shampoo to ensure thorough cleansing. To nourish your hair after the shampoo, use a conditioning mask to make is soft and smooth again. Remember: concentrate shampoo on the scalp, and conditioner on the lengths/tips! Afterward, close the hair follicles using a finishing spray and seal in both care and colour. Don't wash your hair too often. 1-3 times a week is sufficient depending on your hair type.
  2. Limit Heat Styling: Every time we use heat products (such as straighteners or curling irons), we open the hair follicles and cause more damage. The opening of these layers also causes dye to wash out quicker. If you do style your hair using heat, always use a heat protectant beforehand. Additionally, let your hair air dry instead of blow drying.
  3. Protective Hairstyles: Instead of using heat to style your hair, you can also opt for hairstyles that are less damaging, such as braids, buns, and twists to minimize environmental damage.
  4. Eat Healthy and Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water isn't just good for your body and brain, but for your hair as well! Eating a balanced diet including vitamins and minerals such as biotin, vitamins B, D, E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids will support hair health, and drinking plenty of water stimulates the cells to absorb them to their full capacity!
  5. Prevent Fricton: Using silk or satin pillowcases will prevent unnecessary friction and damage to your hair while sleeping. Additionally, gently pat your hair dry after washing instead of rubbing vigorously, using a soft micro-fiber towel or t-shirt.
  6. Protect From Harsh Chemicals: Limit using chemical treatments such as relaxers, perms, or excessive bleaching. When swimming, protect your hair from chlorine using a swim-cap, or using conditioner beforehand.
  7. Trimming: Cutting off split ends every 6-8 weeks helps your hair stay strong and healthy longer. It's easiest (and cheapest) do to this at home with hair scissors (not kitchen scissors! They're too blunt!)
Remember that everyone's hair is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find the routine and products that work best for you. Consistency is key, and paying attention to the specific needs of your hair will help you develop a self-care routine that promotes overall hair health.
